Muori / Die

Performance
by Codice Ivan (Anna Destefanis, Leonardo Mazzi, Benno Steinegger)
2013

A man on crutches walks across a green stage towards the audience; projected above him: “Cammini e basta”

Loosely based on Mozart's Requiem. Codice Ivan's third stage piece is not about death, but about the decay of what creates identities.

“We are death, as well as life!”

Lester Bangs

Life and death do not coincide, but we would like to live as if they did: full of life because aware that we are dying. Muori / Die does not investigate death but the decay of what creates identities, the passing of time and abandonment. It works through three layers of time and three languages, words, body and image, which coexist and confront each other on stage.

Words build the dramaturgy through the body, and what remains of the actions first becomes relics, then images in motion. Memory regenerates life and opens new perspectives beyond the fall, which is not only a physical one. Once the body in action is exhausted, the picture is complete. Identity collapses and leaves room for the essence. Light becomes the protagonist.

Mozart's Requiem enters the stage like thunder, swallowing words, actions and images and revealing a new level, where the poetic dimension opens to a new life. It is not an invitation to die but a reason to live: a contemporary Requiem can only be the choice to live the experience of life, to be present even when you risk falling. “Do not be afraid to be judged. Do not be afraid to be remembered.”
